WELCOME...

On mindfulness

The core of our practice and tradition is mindfulness. For the beginner (and we are all of us beginners!), the best way to establish mindfulness is by concentrating on the breath. Following the breath builds concentration, which is essential for mindfulness; it also helps calm the body and mind. In our tradition, we meditate as we sit, walk or lie down. We follow, and enjoy our breath and we strive to be present in the moment… and not be lost in thought, thinking about the past or the future, problems or goals.  At least twenty minutes a day of sitting meditation is recommended in order to help us grow in mindfulness, calm and equanimity

"Enlightenment, peace and joy will not be granted by someone else. The well is within you, and if we dig deeply in the present moment, the water will spring forth."
—Thich Nhat Hanh

Weekly Meditation

Our activities include gathering weekly on Monday evenings from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm.   We enjoy sitting and walking meditation, dharma talks, viewing deep relaxation, sutra readings, dharma discussion, chanting, movement, mindfulness days and weekend retreats.

"I am of African and Native American heritage, born in Chickasha, Oklahoma ....grew up in Los Angeles, California in the 40’s ...was a bohemian-beatnik of the 50’s .lived seven years in rural Nara, Japan among the people. ...study and practice Zen Buddhism ...proudly served twenty years in my beloved U.S. Marines Corps … was a passionate "servant to the people" in the 60’s Black Panther Party of Los Angeles-Stockwell … was a graphics cameraman in advertising for a Memphis-based international corporation. I approach my art of thirty-plus years, playfully; I seek to reflect the joy and wonder of "little people" (i.e. children) and my enduring faith in the power of spiritual evolution to transform humanity."
